Sweden's gambling industry is set for a major shake-up as the country's parliament voted to shut down its final land-based casino. The decision, made on April 2, 2025, marks the end of an era for physical gambling establishments in Sweden, with the last venue scheduled to cease operations on January 1, 2026.
The closure of Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm, operated by Svenska Spel, comes as no surprise to industry insiders. The venue has experienced a steady decline in both revenue and visitor numbers, mirroring a broader trend across Sweden's land-based gambling sector. This downturn is largely attributed to the rapid expansion of online casinos, which have captured an increasing share of the market in recent years.
Svenska Spel's CEO, Ola Enquist, acknowledged the emotional impact of the decision, stating, "It is of course emotionally tough because it means that an era will end when the casino in Stockholm eventually closes." The company's focus now shifts to supporting its employees and maintaining operations until the closure date.
The shutdown will affect approximately 240 employees at the Stockholm location. Svenska Spel is currently in negotiations with unions to ensure a smooth transition for affected workers. Additionally, the company plans to initiate the sale of the casino property at Kungsgatan 65 in Stockholm.
While the closure is framed as a response to evolving consumer behavior and market dynamics, it has not been without controversy. Sweden's gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, has expressed concerns about a potential increase in illegal gambling activities. The regulator argues that it will require additional resources to monitor and combat unauthorized gambling operations as former casino patrons may seek alternatives.
The Swedish Gambling Authority has been vocal in its opposition to the elimination of land-based casinos, citing the risk of a rise in illegal gambling. As the country adapts to the growing influence of online gambling, the regulatory framework is likely to evolve to ensure player protection and maintain industry integrity.
This move represents a significant shift in Sweden's gambling policy, reflecting the changing preferences of players and the increasing dominance of digital platforms in the gaming sector. As the January 2026 deadline approaches, all eyes will be on how the Swedish gambling landscape adapts to this new reality.
