Sun Tide is a recently released slot machine from Microgaming, but at the same time you will find that it has an older theme, based on the classics, and that it is blended together with the image of the Sun. Despite the title and the background image though, the majority of the symbols used inside will be based on the classic icons. Sun Tide has just 9 active lines, if you want them all, and they’re placed on a setup with 5x3 reels. You have a chance to win prizes of up to $100,000. As for the major features which are available inside, they consist of wild symbols that can expand, of scatters and of free spins which can be retriggered.
The game has fewer lines than most modern slot machines tend to offer these days. You get 9 of them at most, with the option to select only some of them if you want to. You are allowed to place a wager of 1 to 5 coins for each of those active lines, and you will be able to pick a coin size between $0.01 and $2. You can spend at most $10 per line, and up to $90 total. The minimum allowed bet is as low as $0.01 though.
Based on the theme, which is mentioned in the title, you’re getting a slot machine that is dedicated to the Sun. It’s not as evident if you look at the actual design though. You do have a background image in there, with orange and yellow shades in it, and with birds flying together in the top right corner. It looks like an image from sunset, quite beautiful, but it’s mostly about the colors in it and it doesn’t have the details to make it interesting. The rest of the theme is visible in the symbols which occupy the game’s reels, most of them classics that are popular in 3 reel titles. The one symbol which has the Sun connection is the one showing the S logo inside a gold coin, which is quite nicely designed. You get an image of a sunset as well, with palm trees and a yacht used as silhouettes in it. Both symbols which are not considered classics get to act as features. The regular symbols are the classic ones, showing us the images of the diamond, purple 7, a bell, a gold bar, oranges, lemons, cherries, melon and strawberries.
Though the limited number of lines and the design style might give you the impression that this is going to be a game with few features to offer, it doesn’t really do that bad. You have an expanding wild for example, in the symbol which has the gold coin with the S logo on it. The wild expands only on reel 3 though, and appears regular sized on the other four reels. Having wild symbols on active lines can help out by allowing you to form more combinations, since they act as substitutes for the regulars. They don’t replace scatter symbols though. With two or more wild symbols placed on a line, from left to right, they can pay you directly by forming their own combinations. The slot’s jackpot is offered this way. The other symbol to pay attention to is the scatter, the one showing you a sunset. You can take advantage of these symbols when you have two or more (for cash rewards) or three or more (for free spins and cash rewards). The rewards start at 2x the bet and can reach 100x. Landing 3 to 5 scatter symbols will get you 15 free spins, with the possibility of retriggering them. You also get more expanding wilds, so in addition to reel 3, you also have them on reel 2 and 4.
The really big prize in Sun Tide comes via the wild symbol, which will pay as much as $100,000 for a combo of five symbols. You’re looking at a reward of 10,000x the line bet, which is quite nice. The game has a 96.50% average RTP, so it’s going to pay well enough, despite the classic inspiration. There is a big difference between the top jackpot and the rest of the winning combinations though, in terms of payouts, so keep that in mind as well.
Sun Tide doesn’t have the most interesting theme ever, but other than that it is a perfectly acceptable game to play, feature and payout wise.
