About

Leagues of Fortune is a game that has been around for about five years already, so it’s not one of the oldest titles from Microgaming, but not a recent one either. Its theme is a pretty interesting one, being inspired by the Jules Verne novel, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, or at least that’s how it seems to me based on the things we see on the reels. With 5 reels of 4 symbols each, the game manages to deliver a total of 1024 ways to win, instead of paylines. The game pays up to $3,750 and it has stacked wild symbols, scattered treasure chests, free spins and multipliers as high as 5x.

Betting requirements

As you will often find in slot machines which have ways to win, they’re going to be using paylines anyway for their bets, since it’s easier that way. 1024 ways to win are represented in the betting system by 50 fixed lines, on which you can use between 50 and 500 coins each spin. With denominations not going farther than $0.10, the maximum bet is worth $50, while the minimum one can be at $0.50.

Theme & Design

The title of the game might sound like it’s giving you a superhero theme, but actually it seems to based on the famous 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, a Jules Verne novel. You’re looking at the ocean in the background image, while on the reels the images are of the captain, of navigation instruments, maps, treasure chests found at the bottom of the ocean, divers armed with harpoons and submarines. That’s about it for the interesting symbols of the game, the rest being with the standard Royal cards that so many Microgaming slots seem to have. Some of the graphics in Leagues of Fortune look a bit too modern, others look like they’re inspired by the 19th century design, and in some cases we’re looking at standard icons which don’t improve the game one bit. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable game graphics wise, but there is room for improvement.

Special Features

In games with ways to win, like this one, winning combinations don’t need to be in fixed positions on an active line. Instead, you just need matching symbols on neighboring reels, at least three of them and starting from the leftmost reel. There can be some variation there, and some don’t need the symbols to start just from the left, but all of them need the symbols to be on reels that are next to each other. For Leagues of Fortune, one of the two feature symbols which were added is the wild Leagues of Fortune. Sporting a logo and nothing else, the symbol is usable as part of all kinds of combinations of symbols. You only need the wild to be on the right reel, where another symbol is needed for a combo, and it will substitute for it. It’s the advantage of playing a slot with ways to win, the fact that wilds are much more useful. The wild symbols even appear stacked here, so if you have more than one helping out you get a multiplier applied to the prize, since it’s considered that you’re getting multiple combinations formed. The wild symbols can be rewarding on their own, paying up to $150 when forming a combo. They can form multiple combinations actually, since they are stacked, so you rarely get only one combination if they do appear enough times and on the right reels. A common image in a lot of slot machines, the Treasure Chest serves as a scatter in Leagues of Fortune. If you get it to appear enough times, meaning at least in two random positions, it will reward you with a prize. With three or more, it will also get you into the free spins. The rewards vary between 1x and 75x the wager of the round, depending on the triggering symbols. The free spins feature, when triggered, will have a Giant Squid of Fortune appear, with its tentacles touching symbols and turning them over, showing you how many free spins you’ve won from each one. Next, the free spins will start, with all wins inside multiplied by 5x.

Jackpot

The base game will pay up to $150 for a combination of five wilds, an amount that goes up to $750 during free spins, where multipliers will always be applied. The better payouts will come thanks to the fact that the wild is stacked, and so it forms multiple combinations, not just one. If you just want the best paying five symbols, then that would be the scatter, which has rewards of up to $3,750. Like many other Microgaming slot machines, if you look at the RTP you will find that it’s similar to those from other games, and so you can just pick based on the theme and the general gameplay. Here, you have a RTP of 96.49%.

Conclusion

The game has an adventure theme that I enjoyed, along with generous features, but with low payouts for its regular combinations. Luckily, the RTP is good and in the long run it should be as profitable as any other slot machine from Microgaming.
